Innovative Practice/Initiative: Health and Safety Training

Organisation Profile

DMC Mining Services (DMC) operates from its main office in Richmond Hill, Ontario with the US operations based in Salt Lake City, Utah. A Canadian field operations office and shop is located in Val Caron, Ontario. 

The Organisation's Initiative 

1)    Health, Safety & Environment

DMC is the only North American ISO 9001 and OHSAS 18001 certified mining contractor. Safety programs currently in place include first aid and CPR training, supervisor development programs, job specific training and the 5 point safety system. An E-Learning program is being rolled out in the USA offering an orientation module, 32 hour MSHA training and an 8 hour MSHA refresher training for on site and remote access. A similar program will be developed for Canadian operations.

As a Mining Contractor, retention is key and one of our initiatives is to provide learning sessions for our staff.  Our nurse routinely comes to head office to provide "Lunch and Learns" information awareness sessions to our Staff at head office.  She covers a vast aray of topics from "Sun Saftey and Skin Cancer Awareness", "Woman's Health" and "Hypertension".  In addition to having our staff Nurse provide these sessions, we try to professionals from the community, such as "Canadian Blood Services" for blood donations awareness or "Investor's Group" for retirement financial planning and St. John's Ambulance for First Aid and AED Training.

2)    Recruitment Database

As a Mining Contractor - Recruitment is always a challenge.  Projects change constantly as so do the manpower requirements.  We are consistently challenged to find talent within tight timelines.  We are currently looking to implement MAXHIRE, a recruiting initiative that will build an in-house resume database to help us find relevant candidates under short deadlines.  

This database, once built, will provide not only head office with a very valuable resource, but also field HR to manage the high turnovers a Mining Contract must manage.
